Decoding Healthcare: Everything You Need to Know About Your State Medical Board

Healthcare providers often lack comprehensive understanding of the regulatory processes and expectations of their respective state medical boards. This gap in knowledge can lead to inadvertent non-compliance, disciplinary actions, and suboptimal patient care. Additionally, many healthcare professionals are unaware of recent changes in regulations and the implications these have on their practice.

This webinar aims to fill this gap by providing an in-depth overview of state medical board functions, common compliance issues, and recent regulatory updates, equipping providers with the necessary knowledge to maintain adherence to state laws and enhance their practice’s integrity and safety.

At the conclusion of the activity, participants should be able to:

    1. Describe the role and organizational structure of state medical boards, including their responsibilities in licensing, regulation, and disciplinary actions for medical practitioners.
    2. Identify key state medical board requirements for medical practice, including specific guidelines on continuing medical education, reporting of professional misconduct, and standards of care.
    3. Articulate the importance of cultural and linguistic competency in patient care, and outline the relevant state medical board requirements, using case studies to illustrate best practices and regulatory adherence.
    4. Develop an understanding of implicit bias in healthcare settings and identify strategies to mitigate its effects, aligning their practices with state medical board recommendations on bias reduction and equitable care.
    5. Gain the ability to navigate the state medical board’s complaint and disciplinary process, including understanding common causes for complaints, steps for responding to investigations, and actions to take to minimize risk and maintain compliance.
    6. Reflect on the patient populations served and consider how implicit bias may impact appropriate care of patients.

Donald Lefkowits, MD, FACEP

Executive Medical Director, The Hardenbergh Group

Dr. Lefkowits received his undergraduate degree, medical degree, and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. He began his career in Emergency Medicine in 1980 and has practiced at Rose Medical Center since 1984. During his tenure at Rose, Dr. Lefkowits served President of the Medical Staff, Chair of the Credentials Committee and Peer Review Committee, and a member of the hospital  Board of Trustees. He supported hospital and medical staff functions by chairing fair hearings, providing crisis management and press interactions, and developing and nurturing physician leadership programs.

As Medical Director of the Emergency Department, Dr. Lefkowits oversaw a growth in volume from 30,000 annual visits to 45,000. He put in place state of the art Cardiac, Stroke and Trauma alert programs and helped the Rose ED lead the way in programs to enhance ED throughput and patient safety and satisfaction metrics. In 2008, Dr. Lefkowits was honored in 5280, The Denver Magazine, as the Top ED Doctor in Denver.

Dr. Lefkowits is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine and currently serves as the Immediate Past President of the Colorado Medical Board.

Brock Bordelon, MD, FACS

Medical Director, The Hardenbergh Group

Dr. Bordelon attended the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, followed by a general surgery residency at the University of Utah School of Medicine. While in Salt Lake City, he completed a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Bordelon is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, among other regional and national professional societies.

He has practiced general and minimally invasive surgery in Colorado Springs since 1994, and has served as the Chief of Surgery, a member of the Medical Executive Committee, and the Citizenship Committee, among several other hospital medical staff functions. He has been named as a “Top Doctor” by his peers in Colorado Springs Style magazine.

Dr. Bordelon was a member of the Colorado Medical Board for four years and served as the chair of one of the board’s inquiry panels.
